Intensive outpatient programs are treatment programs that do not involve detoxification or ongoing supervision and are used to treat addiction, depression, eating disorders and other dependencies. Unlike residential treatment programs, they allow patients to continue their normal day-to-day lives.

Given the changing health status and characteristics of populations around the world, the estimated need for rehabilitation will only increase in the coming years. People are living longer and longer, the number of people over the age of 60 is expected to double by 2050, and more and more people are suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes, stroke and cancer.
At the same time, injuries (e.g., burns) and developmental disorders in children (e.g., cerebral palsy) are becoming more common. These health conditions can affect an individual's ability to function and are associated with increased levels of disability for which rehabilitation can be beneficial.
Throughout the world there are currently about 2.4 billion people living with a health condition that would benefit from rehabilitation. As health status and population characteristics change around the world, this estimated need for rehabilitation will increase in the coming years. In many parts of the world, this growing need for rehabilitation remains unmet. More than half of the people living in some low- and middle-income countries who need rehabilitation services do not receive them. Rehabilitation services are consistently among the health services most affected by the cholera 19 pandemic.
When treating drug addiction, there is a choice between inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation. Inpatient therapy is always the most appropriate when the addiction is severe and medically assisted detoxification is required
Outpatient therapy in a rehab center, on the other hand, is a practical and flexible way to get help for drug and alcohol addiction when the addiction is not severe or occurs under other conditions.
